German soldiers die after Afghanistan attack

Three German soldiers have died after being attacked while on patrol in the Kunduz region of northern Afghanistan.


Sources in Berlin say the soldiers were trying to escape an attack in their Fuchs personnel carrier and drove into a ditch, which flipped their vehicle.

The German Defence Ministry reported that a joint German-Afghan patrol had been attacked while on patrol and had returned fire, but did not immediately release further details.

The situation in the Kunduz region has been instable for months, with the German soldiers taking part in reconstruction missions feeling increasingly threatened by the local Taliban.

Colonel Georg Klein warned at the start of the month: "We cannot rule out the possibility that the situation could further deteriorate."

Around 1,100 German soldiers are stationed in the region. The last to die there was killed at the end of April when his patrol ran into an ambush.

Het lijkt er op dat het weer goed fout is gegaan:

Berlin - Three German soldiers died in a firefight in the northern Afghanistan region of Kunduz on Tuesday, Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung said.

The three soldiers were taking evasive action with their armoured vehicle when they were involved in a fatal accident, sources told the German Press Agency dpa.

Two of the men died immediately and the third on the way to hospital, the sources said.
Earlier, the defence ministry said a German patrol came under fire during a combined operation with Afghan security forces.
The incident took place some 6 kilometres from a base housing a German provincial reconstruction team helping to improve the local infrastructure.

The security situation in the Kunduz region has deteriorated in recent months amid increasing attacks by fundamentalist Taliban rebels.
Germany has around 1,100 soldiers based in the Kunduz region.

The last German fatality in the region occured at the end of April when a soldier was killed in an ambush.
