Wat kwalificeer jij als een profesioneel explosief?

De Taliban gebruiken voor de IED's meestal een mengsel van ammonium-nitraat, diesel-olie en een aantal toevoegingen zoals alluminium-oxide. De wijze waarop dat spul geproduceerd wordt is ronduit amateuristisch. Toch is de uitwerking van dat goedje helaas maar al te professioneel.

De uitwerking van een springstof op metaal is afhankelijk van de detonatiesnelheid van de springstof, de hoeveelheid springstof, maar vooral ook de wijze van contact maken tussen de springstof en het metaal. Enige afstand tussen de springstof en het metaal (wat bij een aanval met een bootje nogal voor de hand ligt) leidt al snel tot 'slechts' een flinke deuk.

Overigens is dit voor een schip een behoorlijke deuk, waar behoorlijk wat energie voor nodig is.
Iets wat je met een AP (<100g) absoluut never nooit niet voor elkaar zult krijgen...

Ik ben er niet bij geweest en met slechts deze foto als 'bewijs', is het moeilijk oordelen. Dergelijke schade kan echter wel degelijk door een explosie veroorzaakt zijn. Wellicht een (rubber)bootje met HME* of ANFO**. Of afgedreven Somalische piraten die een inschattingsfoutje gemaakt hebben?

Mystery of Japanese tanker damage probed

An investigation has been launched into the unexplained damage suffered by a Japanese oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz near Oman.

The M Star was damaged on Wednesday while travelling from Qatar to Japan.

Port officials in Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates say the ship was involved in a collision. However, the boat's owners Mitsui OSK believe their vessel may have been attacked.

Early reports that the ship was struck by a freak wave have been dismissed.

The M Star is currently docked in Fujairah where local officials are inspecting the damage to its hull and its interior, with the help of the British and US navies.

The incident has stirred fears of a terrorist attack in the Strait, the route for 40% of the world's seaborne oil.

'Submarine collision'

"What we know is some collision happened. We don't know what it was," said Capt Mousa Mourad, a port official in Fujairah.

"It's possible that it could be a submarine collision, or that it could be a sea mine," he said.

But Mitsui OSK maintained on Thursday that its oil tanker was probably attacked.

"We have not reached a conclusion, but we still suspect the tanker was hit by a blast".

Crew members reported seeing a flash and hearing an explosion during the incident shortly after midnight local time on Wednesday.

"There are some reports saying the tanker was hit by strong waves, but it's quite unlikely," said Masahiko Hibino, Mitsui OSK safety management official.

"We have not reached a conclusion, but we still suspect the tanker was hit by a blast."

At a press conference in Tokyo, Mr Hibino displayed images of the tanker which showed damage to the railings, the loss of a life vessel, a shattered window, and broken furniture and fittings and shattered glass inside a dry cabin.

Pictures of the outside of the vessel, published separately, show an indentation several metres across in the hull, but no obvious burn marks or signs of an explosion.

Mr Hibino said Mitsui had hired a Dubai-based specialist on military attacks to investigate the damage.

The M Star, with 16 Filipino and 15 Indian crew members on board, had been bound for Chiba port near Tokyo. One crew member suffered injuries.

The ship was carrying two million barrels of crude. But there are no reports of any oil leaking from the tanker.

Afgaande op deze foto lijkt het er idd op alsof het schip geraakt is door een golf.

Aparte golf, zo op zo'n vlakke zee. Met een nogal vierkant gecentreerde impact. Dus daar geloof ik niks van...

De wijze van indeuken van het metaal, samen met de zwarte blakering net boven de waterspiegel, lijken op sporen van een explosie. Hoewel het op zo'n lage resolutie foto, op zo'n afstand moeilijk met zekerheid te zeggen is.

inderdaad...geen zichtbare tekenen van een raketaanval of bootje met explosieven. De reddingsboot op dezelfde hoogte mist op de foto. Dat vind ik weer een beetje gek. Bedrijfsongelukje?

Hier zijn ze er vrij stellig over dat het een freak wave was....

Attack ruled out in Hormuz tanker incident

Investigations under way to determine cause of damage as vessel carrying crude arrives in Fujairah port for repairs
Dubai (WAM & AFP) The M. Star oil tanker which suffered damage in the Strait of Hormuz yesterday reached Fujairah port for repairs. An official source ruled out the tanker had been attacked.

UAE port officials earlier said the ship was hit by a tremor-triggered wave.

Mousa Murad, Director of Fujairah Port, earlier said the tanker would be refuelled and its ability to navigate by itself would be checked.

Authorities are conducting investigations to establish the cause of the incident. The tanker was heading to Japan from the port of Al Ruwais in the UAE. The M. Star is operated by Mitsui OSK Lines.

Some reports said Japan's transport ministry suspected an attack on the tanker.

Suspicions
"Since one of the crew saw a flash on the horizon immediately before the blast, the company suspects it was highly likely an attack," the ministry was quoted as saying.

The ministry said one crew member was injured and the ship was partly damaged but able to keep sailing.

Junto Endoh, general manager in the Doha liaison office for Mitsui OSK Lines, said the damage was caused by "maybe an attack, not a spontaneous accident; it may be a terrorist attack."

The vessel — crewed by 16 Filipinos and 15 Indians — was carrying 270,000 tonnes of crude but did not suffer a spill.
Initial assessment from Mitsui OSK Lines was that one life boat was blown off the ship and there was some damage to the starboard hatches.

Dubai, 28 juli. Een olietanker van een Japanse oliemaatschappij heeft vannacht schade opgelopen bij een explosie die mogelijk het resultaat was van een aanval in de buurt van de strategisch belangrijke Straat van Hormuz, tussen Iran en Oman. Dat heeft de maatschappij, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, bekendgemaakt.

Een functionaris van de maatschappij zei dat wordt gedacht aan een terroristische aanslag. Al-Qaeda heeft verscheidene jaren geleden aanslagen gepleegd op schepen, waaronder een olietanker, aan de Jemenitische kust.

Bij de explosie werd een opvarende licht gewond; er is geen olielek. De Amerikaanse Vijfde vloot, die in Bahrein is gebaseerd, onderzoekt het incident.

De supertanker M. Star was geladen met 270.204 ton olie uit Qatar en Abu Dhabi onderweg naar Japan. In plaats daarvan vaart het schip nu naar Fujairah, een van de Arabische Emiraten, om de omvang van de schade te onderzoeken. Volgens het Japanse ministerie van Transport had een bemanningslid licht aan de horizon gezien direct voor de explosie, wat een van de redenen is waarom aan een aanval wordt gedacht.

De plaats van de explosie, bij een reddingsboot, maakt het onwaarschijnlijk dat de ontploffing door olie is veroorzaakt. ,,Er is niets dat kan exploderen in dat deel van het schip", aldus een woordvoerder van Mitsui.

Door de Straat van Hormuz, tussen de Perzische Golf en de Golf van Oman, passeren dagelijks 17 miljoen vaten olie, 40 procent van de olie die wereldwijd door tankers wordt vervoerd. Iran heeft gedreigd de engte af te sluiten voor olietankers in het geval van een aanval op zijn nucleaire installaties, maar het heeft de passage zelf ook nodig voor zijn olie-export.
