De SM-2 block 2 heeft een bereik van 130 km en de SM-2 block 3B haalt 165 - 170 km.  De ESSM block 2 zou dus een concurrent van de SM-2 kunnen worden. 

SM-6 komt eraan die nog een groter bereik gaat krijgen dan SM-2 block 3B.

Navy's SM-6 missile cleared for full-rate production

The Standard Missile-6 (SM-6), the U.S. Navy's new ship-launched defense against hostile aircraft and missiles, has received Pentagon approval to enter full-rate production, prime contractor Raytheon said May 22.

The decision will boost the production rate of the SM-6, also known as the Extended Range Active Missile (ERAM), to as many as 125 missiles a year, the company said. Raytheon has been delivering low-rate initial production rounds to the Navy since 2011. The Navy plans to buy a total of 1,800 SM-6s by fiscal year 2024.

The Navy intends to begin fielding the SM-6 on Aegis combat system-equipped cruisers and destroyers in late 2013 to provide greater range against fixed-and rotary-wing manned aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, and land-attack and anti-ship cruise missiles.

Assembled at a Raytheon plant in Huntsville, Ala., the SM-6 combines the airframe and propulsion of the legacy Standard Missile with the advanced signal processing and guidance control capabilities of Raytheon's Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM).

A panel of U.S. Air Force, Army and Navy export policy experts is considering whether to allow the SM-6 to be sold to other countries. Raytheon said it expects that international demand for the missile would be strong.
