Poland plans to acquire two squadrons of Boeing F-15EX Eagle II Fighter Jets.

Since the MSPO 2023 Defense Exhibition, Poland has been in discussions with the American company Boeing regarding the potential acquisition of 32 F-15EX Eagle II fighter jets. This news comes shortly after Lockheed Martin announced that the first F-35A "Husarz" jets destined for Poland are expected to be assembled by next summer in Fort Worth, Texas, before being moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas, for pilot training.

According to sources at Boeing, discussions took place with representatives from the Polish Armament Agency and the Air Force at the beginning of 2024. Rob Novotny, a Boeing official, stated in an interview with the specialized site Defence24 that the talks also focused on investment opportunities in Poland and cooperation with the local defense industry, notably with WZL Nr 2 and the PGZ group (Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa).

The discussions would explore new areas of cooperation, particularly in the production of components and engineering work for the F-15EX, as well as technical support, as highlighted by Mr. Novotny. These talks could lead to strengthening Boeing's supply chain and industrial base in Poland, thereby offering mutual benefits.

Poland's choice of the F-15EX could significantly boost its military capabilities. The F-15EX is an advanced version of the proven fighter aircraft, equipped with two F110-GE-129 engines, electronic flight controls, a digital cockpit, and an AESA APG-82(V)1 active antenna radar. It also features an advanced electronic warfare suite and can carry up to 12 air-to-air missiles.

Poland's interest in the F-15EX is part of a broader modernization of its military aviation. General Ireneusz Nowak, the chief of staff of the Polish Air Force, had previously indicated that the current capabilities were insufficient to meet the current threat level, necessitating ten fighter squadrons, or 160 aircraft. Currently, the F-16s, the already ordered F-35As, and the F/A-50s form eight squadrons, with plans for future expansion.

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, Warsaw has heavily invested in modernizing its military hardware. Among the significant purchases were Abrams tanks, Apache combat helicopters, and HIMARS rocket launchers from the United States, South Korean-made K2 tanks, Chunmoo rocket launchers, K9 self-propelled howitzers, and FA-50 combat aircraft, and at least two Swedish early warning aircraft to complement additional tethered warning systems.

Germany opts for US rather than European F-35 assembly

07 May 2024

Germany is to have its fleet of Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft built in the United States rather than Europe, Janes was told on 6 May.

Berlin has decided that the F-35A variant aircraft contracted for the Luftwaffe are to be built at the US final assembly and check-out (FACO) facility in Fort Worth, Texas, rather than at the European FACO at Cameri, Italy.

"Currently, final assembly and check-out of German F-35 aircraft is planned to occur at the Fort Worth facility using major components from across Europe, including Germany, UK, and Italy," Janes was told in a joint statement issued by Lockheed Martin and the Joint Program Office (JPO).

The Luftwaffe is to receive 35 F-35As, with deliveries commencing in the US in 2026 and the first aircraft arriving in Germany in 2027. Neither Lockheed Martin nor the JPO elaborated on Germany's decision to opt for US rather than European production, while the Bundeswehr referred Janes to those two organisations for comment.

With Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland having previously committed to have their entire or a portion of their fleets built at Cameri, the US government recently decided to open up the European facility to any other continental customers that might wish to use it.

Boeing Pitches F-15EX For Saudi Arabian Fighter Competition

The Typhoon and Rafale are already in the running to meet Saudi Arabia's fighter requirement, with the Eagle II now set to challenge them.

Boeing has confirmed it aims to build on growing export interest in the F-15EX Eagle II by offering the fighter to Saudi Arabia, a long-term operator of the Eagle, which has previously bought successively more capable variants. The latest sales effort comes after Boeing offered the F-15EX to Poland, while Israel recently requested its own version of the jet, and the U.S. State Department has also approved a potential sale to Indonesia. However, the F-15EX finds itself in direct competition in Saudi Arabia with rival European designs: the Dassault Rafale and Eurofighter Typhoon.

"The F-15EX is the right fit adding critical capability for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) as the country seeks to accelerate its armed forces modernization," a Boeing spokesperson told TWZ this week. "The F-15EX complements Saudi Arabia's existing F-15 fleet with 95 percent commonality that includes infrastructure, training and trainer devices, and pilot skill overlap. We are ready to support our longtime and valued customers in Saudi Arabia with the most capable air superiority aircraft in production today."

Luftwaffe yet to decide on final Tornado replacement numbers

02 May 2024

by Gareth Jennings

The German Luftwaffe has not yet determined how many new combat aircraft it is to acquire to replace its fleet of Panavia Tornados, a senior service official told Janes on 2 May.

Responding to a request for clarification and confirmation of the 85 new aircraft figure previously given by industry officials, Commanding General of Air Force Forces Command, Lieutenant General Günter Katz, said the Luftwaffe had never formally declared a one-for-one replacement of the Tornado, and that "a new target number does actually not exist".

The Luftwaffe currently fields 90 Tornado Interdiction Strike (IDS)/Electronic Combat Reconnaissance (ECR) aircraft that are to be retired in 2030. A revised request for proposals (RFP) was issued in 2019 to source one or more types to fulfil these roles. While industry officials briefed at the time that the requirement would cover 85 new aircraft, Lt Gen Katz said that the requirement is for "a number closer to the present Tornado fleet strength".

The service has already contracted 35 Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II and 15 retrofitted Eurofighter Elektronischer Kampf (EK) electronic attack (EA) aircraft to take on elements of the IDS and ECR roles respectively. However, while the F-35As will be additional airframes, the Eurofighter EKs will be existing airframes retrofitted with EA equipment.

Poland's Future F-35s Have Been Officially Named "Husarz"

The name for Poland's F-35s, chosen via a public competition, draws on the nation's military history for inspiration.

byOliver Parken| UPDATED Apr 29, 2024 10:40 PM EDT

Lockheed Martin

Following a public competition to choose the name of its future F-35A Joint Strike Fighters, Poland has revealed that these aircraft will be locally known as Husarz, or hussars. This name pays homage to a very specific cavalry unit from the country's military past.

The winning name was announced earlier today by the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces. The competition itself began on April 12, and entrants were encouraged to submit their name suggestions via the General Staff's competition adverts on Facebook and X. In all, the Polish Air Force is set to receive 32 F-35As from Lockheed Martin, with deliveries expected to begin this year through 2030.

As the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces indicated, almost 800 individual names were submitted. The first stage of the competition, spanning April 12-18, involved identifying the top five most popular name ideas. These were revealed as 'Halny,' 'Husarz,' 'Harpia,' 'Dracarys,' and 'Duch' on April 22. Facebook and X users were asked to choose their favorite name of the five, of which 'Husarz' came out on top.

UK to seek additional F-35 acquisition phases

The UK has touted the prospect of additional procurement batches of the F-35 as it looks to fulfil its 138-aircraft programme of record. (Crown copyright)

The UK government has said that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) will seek additional acquisition phases for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning combat aircraft, beyond the phase currently contracted and the one now in negotiation.

The Earl of Minto Gilbert Timothy George Lariston Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, minister of state at the MoD, said in early April that approval for further procurement tranches of the F-35 will be sought as the UK moves towards its planned 138-aircraft buy over the life of the programme.

"Our plan remains to procure 138 aircraft through the life of the programme. This procurement is phased; our first acquisition phase of 48 aircraft is under way at present, with the second phase consisting of a further 27 aircraft now progressing through the approvals process, which will form the basis of our third front-line Lightning squadron with deliveries expected to continue into 2033. The MoD will seek approval for further acquisition phases at the appropriate time," the minister said.
