Turkey Asks U.S. for Patriot Missiles to Deter Russia in Syria

Turkey deploys HAWK to Idlib    (of gaan ze het nu zelf doen ? .... met HAWK ...    deze zijn uitgefaseerd in NL in 2004 )

The Turkish Armed Forces have deployed at least one MIM-23 HAWK surface-to-air missile system to Syria's Idlib province.

Video clips began to circulate on 27 March showing a convoy of Turkish military vehicles that included MAN trucks towing HAWK components, purportedly near the Kafrlusin (Bab al-Hawa) border crossing in northern Idlib.

At least two trucks towed launchers that were covered up, a third had the loading vehicle for the system on its bed and towed what was probably the system's High Power Illuminator Radar (HPIR). Another truck towed a Continuous Wave Acquisition Radar (CWR), while a Humvee towed what was probably a Sentinel radar.

A second video showed one of the same trucks towing a launcher at a different location where shop signs written in Arabic rather than Turkish could be seen.

This might not be the first Turkish HAWK to be deployed to Syria. Photographs emerged in January 2018 that purportedly showed a battery that had been set up in Daraat Izza in Aleppo province. There has been no confirmation of that deployment.

Turkey received surplus Improved HAWK systems from the United States in the 2000s.

It subsequently initiated programmes to develop indigenous air defence systems, with the low- and medium-altitude ones designated the Hisar-A and Hisar-O respectively.

Waarschijnlijk zullen we enorm empathisch reageren en ze alle steun toezeggen die ze nodig lijken te hebben.
Als ze die grenzen maar dicht houden.......

Rusland is doodleuk bezig om Europa te destabiliseren.
Zij weten donders goed dat de Turken die enorme stroom Syriërs niet aankunnen en deze door gaan laten naar het welvarende Europa.
Wij, naïeve links liberale lulletjes rozenwater, tekenen onze eigen ondergang door niet keihard al die lui op te sluiten en per ommegaande terug te sturen.
Europa gaat dood en niemand is in staat of heeft de wil om dit tegen te houden.
Met deze nieuwe stroom vluchtelingen zullen er grote maatschappelijke onlusten ontstaan.
Vooral makkelijk beïnvloedbare groepen zullen steeds rechtser georiënteerd raken waardoor de problemen in de samenleving als maar groter worden.

Meer en meer is zichtbaar hoe gelukszoekers zich hier storten op criminele activiteiten.
En waarom niet als je niets met deze samenleving en onze normen en waarden op hebt.

Als aanvulling op het onderstreepte en dikgedrukte. Eens en Rusland geeft m.n. financiele hulp aan de partijen op die flanken waardoor hun kansen op succes nog groter worden en dus ook de kans op verdere destabilisering van de politiek.

Verder vind ik persoonlijk wel dat je een verschil moet maken tussen bijv. de Syrische vluchtelingen aan de ene kant en de vaak West- en Noord-Afrikaanse vluchtelingen. Die laatste groep kun je voor het overgrote deel zonder meer als "gelukszoekers" kwantificeren, maar daar heb ik met het overgrote deel van de Syrische vluchtelingen wat meer problemen mee.

IK zeg, perk de vrijheden van vluchtelingen in, bied ze een karige gesloten noodopvang en laat die lui in hun eigen territorium vooral zien hoe armoedig men hier is opgevangen. Vooral ontmoedigen zal helpen bij het maken van de keuze wel of niet naar Europa.
Sleep boten met vluchtelingen terug naar Turkije en maak ze onklaar.
Laat de wereld maar zien dat wij in Europa hele nare en vooral NIET gastvrije mensen zijn en propagandeer dat vooral in het M-O en Noord-Afrika.

It denied its own air force had been involved in the fighting in the Behun area.

Was te verwachten dat de Russen zouden ontkennen bij deze air-ground attacks betrokken te zijn.
Echter, de Syrische LuM stelt niet veel (meer) voor en ik kan me dan ook niet voorstellen dat deze een degelijke operatie zou kunnen opzetten die ettelijke Tukrse MBT's en SPH's zou uitschakelen.

Unnamed Turkish sources told international news agencies on Friday that the country was indeed lifting border controls to allow refugees to try to travel to the EU.
"We will no longer keep the doors closed for refugees who want to go to Europe," one source told AFP.

Syria war: 33 Turkish soldiers killed in attack in Idlib

At least 33 Turkish soldiers have been killed in an air strike by Syrian government forces in north-west Syria, a senior Turkish official has said.
Others were injured in the attack in Idlib province, said Rahmi Dogan, the governor of Turkey's Hatay province.
Turkey retaliated by attacking Syrian government targets.
Russia, Syria's key military ally, said the Turkish troops had been operating alongside jihadist fighters when they were attacked by Syrian forces.
It denied its own air force had been involved in the fighting in the Behun area.
Government forces, supported by Russia, have been trying to retake Idlib from rebels who are backed by Turkey. The air strike came after the rebels retook the key town of Saraqeb.
The Syrian authorities themselves have so far made no public comments on the latest escalation in Idlib, the last Syrian province to remain in opposition hands.
Reports suggest Turkey, a key member of the Nato alliance, may be relaxing its border controls to allow Syrian refugees to seek refuge in the EU.

What do we know about the air strike?
It reportedly occurred on Thursday evening.
"Thirty-three of our soldiers were martyred as a result of the air strike... by the forces of the [Bashar al-]Assad regime," Mr Dogan was quoted as saying by the state-funded Anadolu news agency.

Turkish-backed Syrian fighters were seen taking positions in the town of Saraqeb on Thursday
Those wounded were being treated in hospital in Turkey but none were in a critical condition, he added.

After President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held an urgent top-level security meeting in Ankara, Turkish forces began conducting ground and air strikes on "all known" Syrian government targets, Turkish communications director Fahrettin Altun said.



According to the Russian defence ministry, the Turkish soldiers had been killed in a "bombardment" while operating alongside "terrorists" in the Behun area where, it said, fighters from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham alliance (formerly the Nusra Front) were attacking Syrian government forces.
Russia said it was in constant contact with Turkey to ensure Turkish troops were not targeted in Idlib and had not been informed that Turkish forces were active at Behun.
An unconfirmed Russian media report says two Russian warships equipped with cruise missiles are being sent towards the Syrian coast.

President Erdogan wants Syrian government forces to pull back from positions where Turkey has set up military observation posts and earlier threatened to attack them if they did not halt their advance.
But Syria's government and Russia have rejected his demand to pull back to ceasefire lines agreed in 2018. Russia has also accused Turkey of violating the 2018 ceasefire by backing rebels with artillery fire.

In reaction to the crisis:

- Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg spoke by phone to Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and "condemned the continued indiscriminate air strikes by the Syrian regime and its backer Russia in Idlib province"

- A spokesman for the US state department said: "We stand by our Nato ally Turkey and continue to call for an immediate end to this despicable offensive by the Assad regime, Russia and Iranian-backed forces. We are looking at options on how we can best support Turkey in this crisis"

- UN Secretary General António Guterres expressed "grave concern" over the latest escalation, calling for an immediate ceasefire.

How is the crisis affecting the humanitarian situation?
The fighting in Idlib has driven nearly a million Syrians from their homes since December and the UN says a full-scale battle there could result in a "bloodbath".
Turkey has already taken in some 3.7 million refugees and Turkey's exasperation may lead it to send a new wave of refugees towards Europe.
Unnamed Turkish sources told international news agencies on Friday that the country was indeed lifting border controls to allow refugees to try to travel to the EU.
"We will no longer keep the doors closed for refugees who want to go to Europe," one source told AFP.
Several hundred people are reported to have gathered on the Turkish border at Dikili in the hope of crossing illegally to Greece.
"We are going to Greece, we have packed up and arranged our money," one unidentified person told Turkey's IHA news agency.
"We came here to prepare our boats and we will also prepare our equipments. We will go to Greece from here."

Under a 2016 agreement with the EU, which followed a wave of Syrian refugees and refugees and migrants from other countries to Europe, Turkey imposed stronger controls to curb the flow.
The deal involved an EU pledge to provide €6bn (£5.4bn; $6.6bn) in aid to Turkey to house Syrian refugees.
Turkey's communications director said his country could not take in another million refugees from Syria.
Fahrettin Altun went on Twitter to call for the international community to protect civilians in Idlib from "genocide" by imposing a no-fly zone.

Menen ze dit of zijn ze gewoon aan het trollen?

Strategie, laten zien dat je leeft in de waan van de dag en je je bevindt in een oprechte strijd als lid van een coalitie.

Het zou ook zonder meer een vooropgezette strategie van Erdogan kunnen zijn om zich verder van de NATO te verwijderen en de binnenlandse steun voor bijv. een hardere koers vs. de NATO sterk kunnen doen toenemen omdat als de VS "nee" verkoopt Ankara van de daken zal schreeuwen dat de NATO Turkije als volwaardige lidstaat discrimineert en men niet op het bondgenootschap kan rekenen als Turkije hulp nodig heeft.

Mooie manier om ook direct verdere toenadering tot Rusland te zoeken ("want die helpen hun bondgenoten tenminste") en als het Syrie-spel is afgerond met die "tegenstander" nauwer op te trekken. Uiterst cynisch en volledig voor de buhne, maar m.i. zeker niet ondenkbaar dat Putin en Erdogan dit als vriendjes al onderling hebben afgesproken.

Een bondgenootschap is (m.i.) een tweerichtingsstraat en dat de ene partner daar meer uit haalt of kan halen dan de ander is logisch, maar het is geen selectief eenrichtingsverkeer vanuit een van de bondgenoten naar de andere toe om vervolgens wel volledig aanspraak te maken op alle 'benefits' van datzelfde bondgenootschap...
