Lithuania picks German Boxer IFVs for EUR 400m armament upgrade

Lithuania will open talks with German manufacturers over to purchase Boxer infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) for the country's military, the State Defence Council (VGT) decided on Friday.

The decision of the VGT was announced on Friday by the chief presidential advisor on national security affairs Valdemaras Sarapinas."The State Defence Council made the decision unanimously," he reported.

Lithuania wants to buy Boxer IFVs with Elbit System of 30mm unmanned turrets, a 7.62 mm machine gun, and Spike long range anti-tank missiles.
The country plans to pay EUR 400m to purchase 88 IFVs, among which 84 IFVs will be used for combat operations and the remaining four for commanders.
The first vehicles are expected to reach Lithuania in 2017, while a complete order should be executed by 2019.

The purchase is being conducted via the international organisation for weaponry procurement the Joint Organisation for Armaments Cooperation (OCCAR).According to Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas, this is going to be the largest army modernisation project so far in Lithuania. He says that Boxer IFVs are the most suitable for Lithuania in terms of the provisions of its armed defence conception and operating environment.

Lithuania closes in on IFV selection

Lithuania will make a decision on what type of new 8x8 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) it will purchase at the end of November, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on 29 October.

The MoD stated that it had hoped to have selected a vehicle by now, but had recently received two government proposals (from the United States and Poland) and needed additional time to evaluate them.

The new 8x8 will replace the country's aging M113 tracked armoured personnel carriers. These will initially be used to equip two battalions of the country's 'Iron Wolf' mechanised infantry brigade, for which 60-72 IFVs will be required - although the country may later buy a second batch of vehicles.

The MoD also revealed the various bidders for the requirement. In addition to the two government-to-government (G2G) proposals, there are 10 bidding companies: Patria's AMV fitted with the UT 30 Mk 2 turret; the ARTEC Boxer fitted with the RCT 30 or Lance 30 turret; the Iveco Superav fitted with the UT 30 Mk2 turret; the Nexter VBCI with the T25 or T40 turret; the General Dynamics Land Systems LAV II with the Kongsberg MCT30 turret; the Otokar Arma and Mizrak-30 turret; and the FNSS Pars with the E30 turret. Meanwhile, Elbit has separately bid its UT 30 Mk1 and Mk2 turrets, while Lockheed Martin UK has offered its 40 CTAS turret.

In July the MoD's Materiel Acquisition Commission recommended the Boxer for the requirement, although the final decision will be made by Lithuania's State Defence Council - comprising Lithuania's President, Defence Minister, Chief of Defence and the speaker of the Lithuanian Parliament.

For operations against hardened and armoured targets, the PuBo could be armed with the multi-purpose, light guided missile system, the Bundeswehr's variant of the Rafael Spike-LR fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile.

Nee, dan lees je het verkeerd.mer is helemaal geen uitspraak gedaan over de uitrusting van boxer met spike. De journalist zegt enkel dat het op t apparaat kan. Niet de bundeswehr.

"The idea is to be able to fully deploy this force anywhere in mainland Europe in up to 48 hours, making full use of the existing rail and road infrastructure. Also, this is not a rehash of the old tracks vs wheels battle. A brigade sized wheeled rapid response element could be a door opener for heavy forces."

Het gaat dus vooral om vervoer over land.

Verder heeft het artikel erover dat mogelijk 100 stuks benodigd zullen zijn.

Het mag duidelijk zijn dat ik blij verrast was toen ik dit las vanmorgen. Het sluit aan bij wat ik in mijn Alternatieve Opzet voorstel voor Nederland (13e brigade)..en het kan natuurlijk ook voor de Duitsers werken. Inderdaad gericht op snelle inzet binnen Europa...maar ook daarbuiten.

Krijg zomaar een onderbuik gevoel dat onze 13 Lichte Brigade zich hier bij aan gaat sluiten.... zou mooi staan in het rijtje integratie.  

Ook het eerste wat ik dacht zeker na dit stukje tekst:

the new formation would constitute a German contribution to NATO's Framework Nations Concept, where smaller armies can plug their capabilities into an organisational backbone provided by a larger, framework nation.

En weet je... twee van onze gemotoriseerde infanterie bataljons wat ondersteuning van genie, staf en wat andere elementen en dat als een integrale taakgroep (of een ouderwets regiment zo je wilt) aan die Duitse eenheid toevoegen (als dit tenminste een vaste brigade wordt en niet een roulerende eenheid die wordt ''aangeboden'') en de resterende eenheden opheffen of aan 43 Mech toevoegen, daar KAN ik mee leven ALS  43 gemechaniseerd dan vervolgens ook echt wat wordt opgepimpt met bijv. die afdeling PH2000's en dat verdoemde  vuursteuncommando weer wordt opgeheven of wordt beperkt tot Luchtmobiel en Mariniers met 120mm mortieren... en nog wat meer hoogstnoodzakelijke zaken voor een zware "brigade"...

Gaat dit nu een nieuwe brigade worden of wordt een van de bestaande wielerbrigades een nieuw naampje gegeven.

Het zou een breuk zijn met de trend van Duitse bezuinigingen op de Bundeswher. Dus ga ik er van uit dat een bestaande brigade word omgebouwd.
