Norway will acquire British frigates
Press release | Date: 31/08/2025

The Norwegian Government has selected the United Kingdom as a strategic partner for the acquisition of new frigates. The purchase of British frigates will be the largest Norwegian defence capability investment to date.

'Norway and the United Kingdom are close allies, with common interests and strong bilateral ties. I am confident that the strategic partnership with the UK for purchasing, developing and operating frigates is the right decision. This partnership enables Norway to reach the strategic objectives our Parliament set out in the current Long-Term Plan on Defence,' said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

In connection with the Norwegian defence pledge, the Parliament decided that Norway should select a strategic partner for the acquisition of new frigates, as quickly as possible. This is now being followed up by the Norwegian Government. The Storting has been consulted through the expanded Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence. Delivery of the British Type-26 frigates to Norway will start in 2030.

'Selecting the United Kingdom as a strategic partner for frigates was also recommended by the Chief of Defence. The choice represents a historic strengthening of the defence cooperation between our two countries,' said Støre.

Since November last year, Norwegian authorities have considered France, Germany, USA and UK as a strategic partner on frigates.

'It has been a difficult choice. The four candidates, France, Germany, USA and the UK, have provided strong and competitive proposals. They are all close allies, and I wish to express my appreciation for a constructive process and dialogue. All four allies are strategic partners for Norway. The extensive cooperation on security and defence policy will continue at full strength with all of them,' said Støre.

A stronger strategic partnership
A long-term, strategic partnership on frigates requires deepened and strengthened cooperation in the time to come.

'Together we will acquire frigates to the British Royal Navy and the Royal Norwegian Navy. We will operate and develop the frigates for the coming decades. This will strengthen our and NATO's ability to patrol and protect the maritime areas in the High North. This is of great importance to Norwegian, British and allied security in these times of global instability,' said Støre.

Norway and the United Kingdom have long lasting, close ties. After having operated British vessels during World War II, the post war navy was largely built on British doctrines, tactics and operational concepts.

'We have strong shared interests in the North Atlantic. Our Armed Forces maintains a close cooperation, and with a joint frigate program, we will be able to operate seamlessly and integrated in our joint areas of interest,' said Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik.

Extensive industrial cooperation
The strategic partnership with the United Kingdom will be accompanied by extensive industrial cooperation. In the draft agreement the United Kingdom has guaranteed for industrial cooperation with Norwegian industry equivalent to the total value of the acquisition.

'This is positive for Norwegian industry and Norwegian jobs. The industry will play a vital role especially in maintaining and keeping the vessels up to date. We have identified a wide range of industrial and technological areas of cooperation where Norwegian industry can compete for contracts,' says Støre.

Ships for anti-submarine operations
The British Type 26 frigates are warships specifically designed to detect, track down and combat submarines. The Norwegian and British vessels will be as identical as possible, and have the same technical specifications.

'Having identical vessels will enable us to operate even more efficiently together on challenging missions. It will also reduce costs and make joint maintenance easier. Additionally, it opens up the possibility for us to perform joint training of personnel, and perhaps even use Norwegian and British crew interchangeably. This is something we will look into further within the framework of the strategic partnership,' said Sandvik.

The Norwegian frigates will be equipped with anti-submarine capable helicopters. A decision on what type of helicopter the Norwegian frigates will be operating has not yet been made.

'The Norwegian frigates will be equipped with helicopters with anti-submarine capability. At the same time, it is important that we consider the rapid technological developments, and explore the possibilities for utilizing unmanned platforms. This is something we will look further into together with British partners,' said Sandvik.

Separate government agreement
The Norwegian and British governments will soon finalize a binding agreement which sets the framework for the strategic partnership. Once the agreement is signed, the two parties will enter into contract negotiations with the main British supplier, BAE Systems.

In parallel, Norwegian and British authorities will negotiate separate industrial cooperation agreements for various collaborative projects with relevant industrial partners.

'Our first goal is to finalize the Government agreement shortly. Then we will move into contract negotiations. We will negotiate, among other things, the price and delivery schedule for the vessels, before returning to the Parliament with an investment decision,' said Sandvik.

Royal blessing for new frigate as HRH The Princess of Wales names HMS Glasgow

22 May 2025

Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales, Sponsor of HMS Glasgow, today gave her blessing to the Royal Navy's newest warship.

Smashing a bottle of whisky against the hull for good luck, Her Royal Highness formally named HMS Glasgow, the first of eight Type 26 frigates at the leading edge of naval warfare.

To cheers from hundreds of friends, family, workers, VIP guests and the 45-strong ship's company at BAE Systems shipbuilding facility in Scotstoun, The Duchess of Rothesay, as she is known in Scotland, declared the time-honoured words: "I name this ship Glasgow. May God bless her and all who serve in her."

Her Royal Highness was accompanied throughout her visit by The Prince of Wales.

Proceedings opened with an inspection of the Royal Guard, followed by the 25-minute naming ceremony, during which Second Sea Lord Vice Admiral Sir Martin Connell thanked Their Royal Highnesses for their support and all those involved in the Type 26 endeavour to reach this milestone in the programme.

"From the first ever HMS Glasgow, sailing under the Royal Navy flag at the end of the 17th Century to the ship we see here in the 21st Century, HMS Glasgow has evolved and adapted to meet the warfighting and operational demands of its day.

"Each metamorphosis saw shipbuilders adapting materials and designs so that crews could operate each successive HMS Glasgow on operations and in conflict and war.

"The result of this being 11 battle honours – HMS Glasgow's pedigree is awe inspiring."

He hailed the latest ship as "a pure-bred Anti-Submarine Warfare platform, setting the standard for naval warfare", ready to "meet the global and geopolitical challenges of today".

He continued: "HMS Glasgow and her class represent the next chapter of naval innovation, safeguarding the UK's interests and contributing to national prosperity."

Following prayers for the new ship led by Chaplain of the Fleet the Venerable Andrew Hillier, Her Royal Highness was invited to step up to the ceremonial platform and activate the device which blessed the hull with whisky.

Additional Type 26 and Type 32 frigates 'needed'

https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/additional-type-26-and-type-32-frigates-needed/

Royal Navy considers purchase of vertical launch anti-submarine rocket
The RN has issued a Request for Information (RFI) notice to industry for what it calls a future Long Range Anti-Submarine Warfare Weapon (LRAW). Here we consider the options and what the implications would be if this weapon is brought into service.

Testing the market
In simple terms, LRAW can be described as a missile fired from a Mk41 VLS cell that can deliver a lightweight (or very lightweight) anti-submarine torpedo beyond the range of existing submarine-launched heavyweight torpedoes. The RN says LRAW must integrate with its combat and sonar systems and 500 missiles should be used as the costing assumption. It should be emphasised that an RFI is in no way a commitment to procurement and is just a method of gathering proposals from industry in order to understand what is available.

The RFI is also clear the RN is not seeking the torpedo, only the missile to deliver it. LRAW would therefore probably carry either the existing Sting Ray Mod 1 or more likely, the Future Lightweight Torpedo currently under development by BAE Systems. The RN will consider proposals for, completely novel solutions, MOTS (Military off the shelf) – ie. existing weapons or modifications of an existing missile design.

Type 26 Frigate to be armed with anti-ship cruise missiles

https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/type-26-frigate-to-be-armed-with-cruise-missiles/

HMS Glasgow to enter service 12 months sooner than planned
Best even afwachten... 12 maand is zeker niet niks... En gezien hun vorige projecten zou het me niet verbazen mochten ze uiteindelijk gewoon "op tijd" opgeleverd worden i.p.v. een jaar vroeger.

HMS GLASGOW blocks come together for first time

1 May 2021

The aft block of HMS GLASGOW, the first City Class Type 26 frigate being built for the Royal Navy, has been rolled out of the build hall to join the forward block at our BAE Systems shipyard on the River Clyde.

In a busy period for HMS GLASGOW, teams at our Govan shipyard prepared and completed a series of complex manoeuvres to bring the aft block out of the ship block and outfit hall and into position to meet the forward block. This significant moment brings the two blocks together, and for the first time the full size, scale and the elegant lines of HMS GLASGOW are out in the open.

The aft block contains the versatile mission bay and hangar which is capable of supporting helicopters, boats, mission loads and disaster relief stores, while the flight deck is capable of landing a Chinook helicopter for transport of embarked forces.

HMS GLASGOW is the first in a new generation of cutting-edge Type 26 frigates, designed and built in her namesake city. The Type 26 programme supports more than 4,000 jobs across the UK, making a significant contribution to the nation's economic recovery by maintaining much-needed skills and capabilities.

The Type 26 is the original variant of BAE Systems' Global Combat Ship, which Australia and Canada have both selected as the reference design for their anti-submarine frigate programmes, supporting greater operational, training and intelligence ties between the three nations.

https://www.mbda-systems.com/product/camm-er/
