De mogelijke Skyrangers zullen toch een radar nodig hebben. De radars op de torens hebben slechts een bereik van 20 km (fighters) en 5 km (UAV's).

En er zijn nog 100 andere modules te bedenken die allemaal op die 10 voets container basis passen waardoor ze op de ACSV passen.

Nieuwe tijdelijke radar Nieuw Milligen



Een nieuwe radar in Nieuw Milligen bewaakt vanaf vandaag het luchtruim in Nederland. Het gaat om de Groundmaster400a van fabrikant Thales. Deze vervult de taken tot het nieuwe SMART-L-radarstation in Herwijnen operationeel is.

Net als de mobiele NAVO-radar die de afgelopen 4 maanden dienst deed, is de Groundmaster een interim oplossing voor de Medium Power Radar. Deze werd eind maart na 52 jaar voorgoed uitgezet.

SMART-L-radarstation
De SMART-L is een moderne radar voor militair gebruik. In het Friese Wier is dit type al sinds 2021 operationeel. De Groundmaster400a is qua techniek vergelijkbaar met de SMART-L, alleen compacter en transporteerbaar. Daarnaast is de SMART-L breder inzetbaar. Deze kan op langere afstanden ook ballistische raketten detecteren en volgen.

De GM400a wordt met name ingezet bij conventionele luchtdreiging op een willekeurige locatie. Dat maakt deze radar uitermate geschikt om de noodzakelijke radardekking boven Nederland te versterken.

Met beide radars bewaakt Defensie het Nederlandse deel van het NAVO-luchtruim en begeleidt militaire luchtoperaties. Ook ondersteunt de krijgsmacht er civiele partijen mee. Denk aan de politie en andere opsporingsdiensten.

Eurosatory 2024: Norway to receive GM200 MM/C radars next year

Norway is to receive Ground Master 200 (GM200) Multi Mission/Compact (MM/C) radars in 2025, Janes learned at the Eurosatory 2024 defence exhibition held in Paris on 17-21 June.

The Nordic country ordered five GM200 MM/Cs under a government-to-government agreement with the Netherlands in May 2021, with a follow-on order for three more announced in November 2022.

Thales Nederland handed the first GM200 MM/C radar to the Royal Netherlands Army (RNLA) in Hengelo, the eastern Netherlands, on 14 February. The Netherlands placed the first order for nine of the radars mounted on Scania Gryphus trucks in 2019.

Norway was the second country to order the GM200 MM/C in 2021, followed by Denmark and Lithuania joining the programme in 2023.

Norway ordered eight GM200 MM/Cs mounted on FFG's Armoured Combat Support Vehicle (ACSV); Lithuania six mounted on trucks; and Denmark five detachable radars mounted on towers.

The GM200 MM/C is the land-based version of the Thales NS200 naval radar that supports missions including simultaneous weapon locating and counter battery fire, air surveillance, and air defence. Equipped with an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, it can detect and classify unmanned aerial vehicles and track rockets, artillery shells, and mortar rounds and distinguish them from objects such as birds and windfarms.

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that it would acquire GM200 MM/Cs under a government-to-government agreement for the procurement of a new Deep Find radar under its Project Serpens.

Wat ik nu niet snap is dat deze radars ook in Den Helder en Hengelo hun rondjes draaien hebben daar de mensen in de buurt geen last van deze dingen of gaat dat geluid op in het grotere stad geluid?

Bij Thales (Hengelo) en de Marine (den Helder) draaien de radars sporadisch. Deze radars draaien vol continu. Het ging als ik mij niet vergis vooral over geluid 's nachts.

Defensie vervangt radarstations tijdelijk door mobiele systemen

Defensie zet een mobiel radarsysteem van de NAVO in om het radarstation in Wier voor een half jaar te vervangen. Dat is binnenkort buiten gebruik door een verbouwing vanwege geluidsoverlast. Daarnaast koopt Defensie een nieuw mobiel systeem, de Groundmaster 400a. Dat gaat het luchtruim in het zuiden bewaken tot eind 2026. Dan neemt een nieuw radarstation in Herwijnen die taak over. 

Dit schrijft staatssecretaris Christophe van der Maat vandaag in een brief aan de Tweede Kamer. De inzet van de mobiele radarsystemen is voor nu de best haalbare optie, maar Van der Maat benadrukt dat het om een tijdelijke oplossing gaat. "Mobiele radarsystemen bieden een basisdekking. Defensie stelt hogere eisen en wil het luchtruim bewaken met state of the art SMART-L-radarstations die beduidend beter zijn. Het is daarom van groot belang dat het nieuwe radarstation in Herwijnen er zo snel mogelijk komt."

Geluidsnormen
Defensie gebruikt nu twee radarstations om het Nederlandse luchtruim te bewaken en te beveiligen. Voor Noord-Nederland is dat het nieuwe SMART-L-radarstation in Wier. Dat mag volgens de geldende geluidsnormen alleen overdag aan staan. 's Avonds en 's nachts maakt het namelijk te veel lawaai. Vanwege de verslechterde veiligheidssituatie in Europa is de radar sinds maart vorig jaar toch 24/7 in gebruik.

Het radarstation wordt binnenkort verbouwd en krijgt een geluidswerende koepel en een aangepaste aandrijving om de geluidsoverlast tegen te gaan. Na de verbouwing moet het station aan de geluidsnormen voldoen. Om de verbouwingsperiode van een half jaar te overbruggen, gebruikt Defensie een Deployable Air Defence Radar (DADR) van de NAVO, vanaf vliegbasis Leeuwarden.

Risico
Het luchtruim in het zuiden wordt bewaakt door het zwaar verouderde MPR-station in Nieuw Milligen. Dat loopt een steeds groter risico om uit te vallen. Het duurt zeker nog tot eind 2026 voordat een nieuw te bouwen SMART-L-radarstation in Herwijnen de luchtruimbewaking kan overnemen. Om die periode te overbruggen koopt Defensie een Groundmaster 400a van Thales Frankrijk. Deze wordt geplaatst op het militair terrein in Nieuw Milligen. De Groundmaster is vanaf het derde kwartaal van 2024 beschikbaar.

Defensie heeft de NAVO gevraagd om de DADR na het half jaar in Leeuwarden voor een paar maanden te verplaatsen naar Nieuw Milligen. Dit omdat het onzeker is of het verouderde MPR-station blijft werken. Zo heeft ook het zuidelijk deel van het luchtruim in het tweede kwartaal van volgend jaar een basis radardekking.

Thales selected by Royal Netherlands Navy to provide 8 High Tech radars

The Netherlands Defence Materiel Organisation and Thales signed a contract for the delivery of an NS100 radar, seven Scout Mk3 radars and an IFF system.

The NS100 dual-axis multi-beam surveillance radar will replace the Variant radar currently deployed on HNLMS Johan de Witt, one of the Landing Platform Docks (LPD) in service in the Royal Netherlands Navy. The Sea Acceptance Tests are scheduled to take place in 2023.

A major reason for selecting the NS100, next to its unparalleled performance, is fleet-wise logistic advantages. The Royal Netherlands Navy already operates the latest generation of Thales 4D AESA radars on the majority of its vessels and, given the radar's flexible architecture, it is easy to offer through–life introduction of new capabilities thereby future-proofing the radar. The NS100 on the Royal Netherlands Navy's other LPD, HNLMS Rotterdam, will be updated, so that the radars on both LPDs will be identical.

The same contract specifies the delivery of Scout Mk3 surveillance radars to be installed on HNLMS Johan de Witt and on the Combat Support Ship that is presently being built for the RNLN. The CSS will also receive a Thales IFF system. Five more Scout Mk3 radars will be supplied for the M-class frigates operated by the RNLN and the Belgian Naval Component and for spares and training purposes. This contract raises the number of Scout Mk3 radars under contract to 15.

Air Force Eyes European ABMS Demo In Spring     ( ben benieuwd of NL ook nog betrokken wordt in de oefening met de nieuwe Thales radars en eventueel een LCF fregat .. )

The Air Force is working to bring its Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS) to Europe this spring as it searches for ways to integrate allies into plans for All-Domain Operations, says Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian, commander of Air Forces Europe and Africa.

"We've been planning on leveraging a Spring '21 exercise here in Europe to bring in some capabilities that would allow us to work through, I'll use the term 'layered ISR' capabilities," he told the Mitchell Institute today.

Harringian said that US allies are "very interested" in US ideas about All-Domain Operations. "Clearly, they are looking — to use in my words — 'see themselves' in JADC2 and how do they fit in." This includes considering how enabling sensors, such as ground-based radar, owned by some allies that already provide data to NATO might be integrated. It also includes how to link allied F-35 Joint Strike Fighters into US Air Forces that ultimately will be using ABMS.

"They're looking to ...understand the concept," he said. "What we need to do is continue to turn PowerPoints into action" — that is, operationalize the concept so that allies can "get a better sense and feel of it."

The idea is to test ABMS-developed software to speed transfer of sensor data to a variety of "shooters" in the European theater in a manner that allowed allies to be involved, he explained. "We are working through who and what that might mean, and at this point, I don't have that locked down yet."

UPDATE BEGINS. Harrigian did not specify which European-based exercise he was referring to. However, a USAFE spokesperson told Breaking D the command is hosting the fourth in the Air Force's planned ABMS On-Ramp series.

"Gen. Harrigian was referring to an ABMS technology demonstration that will be the 4th event in a series of ABMS demonstrations led by Air Force Headquarters. This event will support ongoing Joint All Domain Command and Control (JADC2) efforts and will be executed in collaboration with USEUCOM Staff, components, and partners during the first quarter of 2021," the spokesperson said. "We plan to exercise ABMS technology On-Ramp 4," the spokesperson added, to "leverage the information learned to refine sensor to shooter timelines." UPDATE ENDS.

Harrigian said it is crucial that allies not only be technologically capable of linking with US forces via the overarching Joint All Domain Command and Control (JADC2) network for managing all-domain battle, but also that they be involved in development of concepts and plans, to allow them to decide where and how they can best contribute. You can't just bring them in in execution and go: 'Hey we built the plan, so sorry, just do what we told you."

Harrigian said that one of the keys to making this happen will be working around the security and secrecy protocols that have so often in the past presented major hurdles during joint US-allied operations.

"One of the things we got to push on hard is the security part of it," he stressed. "We can find ways to do it that — without getting into all the classification details — there are ways to bring them in the tent, get them what they need to know, and allow them to be key participants from planning, through execution and then the debrief," he added.

As Breaking D readers know, the second ABMS On-Ramp exercise is being planned for Aug. 30-Sept. 4, with Nellis AFB in Nevada serving as the coordination center. The exercise will, like the first one this past December, involve Northern Command but be focused on a scenario requiring forces to support Space Command in battling an attack on US space assets. The third is being planned for this fall, and will focus on the Indo-Pacific theater.

Harrigian noted that he hopes that some of the software development techniques and technologies to speed sensor-to-shooter timelines demonstrated during the next On-Ramp will be ready for integration with the Air Operations Centers in Europe.

"We are working closely with the Headquarters Air Force team, and AFWIC to fine tune the specifics of those capabilities that we would like to leave behind," he said. (AFWIC is the Air Force Warfighting Integration Capability office that seeks to pinpoint new areas of investment to help rapidly bring all-domain capabilities to warfighters.)

Outgoing Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein has repeatedly stressed that the service is keen to rope allies into its ABMS effort, which is designed to develop technologies to enable JADC2 — primarily focused on cutting-edge software and spiral development processes that allow rapid upgrades to systems. These include the gatewayONE communications node that can translate the incompatible machine languages used by the F-35 and the F-22 fighter jets. It also includes platformONE for securely building software.

In addition, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. John Hyten told Colin back in February that the Joint Staff is organizing a third Global Integrated Exercise (GIE) specifically designed to test out ADO concepts for this fall.The GIEs, launched by previous JCS Chair Gen. Joe Dunford, involve all the Combatant Commands, the National Security Council and other top national security leaders, and are focused on fighting Russia and China. Two GIEs were held last year, one in the spring and one in the fall, Hyten said.
