Fleet of new submarines armed with $6bn worth of weapons

The Defence Department is poised to spend up to $6 billion arming Australia's new fleet of submarines with an arsenal of next-generation weapons likely to include underwater drones and anti-aircraft missiles. Defence confirmed it had allocated between $5bn and $6bn on weapons for the 12 new subs, due to come into service in the 2030s.

The $5bn-$6bn price tag comes on top of the $50bn cost of the submarines and will cover arming the subs over the course of their operational life, which is expected to ­extend well into the century. Defence has said it would build a new submarine every two years, meaning the last new sub will enter service in the 2050s. With each sub having an operational lifespan of about 30 years, the navy is likely to be operating them well into the 2080s. The Defence Department confirmed to a Senate estimates hearing that the money would fund "the full scope of weapons and deployable systems'' for the subs. "This includes torpedoes and missiles, as well as emerging systems and technologies," it said.

Australian Strategic Policy Institute senior analyst Marcus Hellyer said emerging technologies made it very difficult to say what the final price for the subs would be. Mr Hellyer said weapons on the new subs could include unmanned submersibles, anti-aircraft missiles and "smart'' mines. "The really interesting growth area is autonomous underwater vehicles,'' he said.

"That's certainly something that will increasingly shape undersea warfare.
"I'd be very surprised if Defence wasn't looking at acquiring underwater vessels that can be deployed from a submarine.''

Mr Hellyer said future subs would deploy relatively cheap, disposable drones as a network of sensors to detect enemy vessels. He said as the technology developed, the subs would act as motherships deploying cheaper, unmanned submersibles that would perform surveillance roles, a mode of warfare called "human-machine teaming''. Modern submarines also had the ability to shoot down sub-hunting helicopters using vertical missile tubes, a capability the navy was likely to be exploring. French company Naval Group will build a version of its nuclear-powered Shortfin Barracuda class submarine. The Australian variant will be conventionally powered.

Canadian Navy Decides to Start Upgrades to Extend Life of Aging Submarine Fleet    (..    laat Canada maar eens praten met NL over vervanging van hun onderzeeboten ! )

Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Victoria is the lead ship of Canada's four-boat submarine squadron, whose service life will now be extended to keep them in service well into the 2030s

The Department of National Defence is pushing ahead with plans to extend the lives of Canada's submarine fleet, with the head of the navy hoping some work will start in the coming months.

The movement comes as countries around the world have stepped up investments in their submarine and anti-submarine fleets to protect their waters — and operate in waters not under their control.

Canada's four Victoria-class submarines have a troubled history since they were bought second-hand from Britain in 1998, with successive governments investing hundreds of millions of dollars in constant repairs and upgrades.

But in an interview with The Canadian Press, Royal Canadian Navy commander Vice-Admiral Ron Lloyd said the diesel-powered submarines — HMCS Chicoutimi, Victoria, Corner Brook and Windsor — have finally turned a corner.

Lloyd specifically pointed to HMCS Chicoutimi's having recently spent 197 days in the Pacific and Asia even as HMCS Windsor was patrolling the Mediterranean with NATO as proof the submarines are living up to their potential.

"The fact we had two boats concurrently deployed, if that doesn't speak to the success of the program, I don't know what does," said Lloyd, who will retire from the military later this year after three years as navy commander.

The clock has been ticking on the four vessels: without upgrades, the first of the submarines will reach the end of its life in 2022, according to documents obtained through access to information, while the last will retire in 2027.

Nouja, dit zijn van die vragen die echt het simpelste van het simpelste te boven gaan.
En inderdaad, een buitenstaander zal het nooit echt begrijpen.

Echter, in dit geval zie ik ook de toon en zelfvoldane klus van die griet. En die suggereren dat dit gesprek iets anders ging dan ze zich had voorgenomen. Dit is er volgens mij zo eentje die De Speld niet van echt kan onderscheiden en dacht de Admiraal even flink te kunnen laten zweten.

Ik vond de manier waarop de duidelijk verveelde admiraal haar een en ander probeerde bij te brengen subliem over "pumpjet". Ze leek maar niet te begrijpen dat die sub geen SSN ging worden. Daar liep het voor haar al meteen fout...
En aan het bevende stemmetje en bijna stotterende reacties te horen ging het idd helemaal niet zoals ze zich voorgesteld had. Ook de reacties/interrupties van anderen, o.a. over wat al dan niet 'Geheim' is riepen haar meermaals tot order...

Dat is precies wat ik bedoel. Lees een artikel over onderzeeboten voor je aan zo'n debat begint, bekijk de website van de RAN om te leren over de huidige capaciteit. Bezoek wikipedia en ze had het antwoord op de endurance kunnen vinden om een idee te krijgen. Heb je daarna nog vragen, dan zit die marineman daar om ze te beantwoorden.

Ik begreep al dat ze niet in het kabinet zit. Ik bedoel ook dat iedereen in australie was gebaat bij een dergelijk 'onderzoek'. Dit is gefaal, dat ben ik zeker met je eens.

Precies dit. Daarom denk ik ook dat ze is gebruikt door haar partij. Dit project had w.s al genoeg vertraging maar een of andere lobby/belangengroep zal wel aan hebben gedrongen op een comissie. Daar is aan toegegeven en dat moest vooral niet voor de subs gaan liggen. Iemand is aangesteld die geen idee heeft waar ze mee bezig is of gewoon the wrong person for the job is.. nou zie hier. Dat is hier gebeurt.

Zij faalt niet, de Australische politiek faalt hier. Er gebeurt hier in ieder geval iets heel vreemds. Dat 1 figuur een loodzwaar technisch moeilijk niche dossier moet gaan doorlichten. Absurd natuurlijk, maar asjeblieft.. denk voor jezelf. accepteer niet direct wat je denkt te zien.
